Jessica Furst was
dubbed "Messy Jessie" practically at birth. While growing
up, she could typically be found decorating and redecorating the
walls of her bedroom, leaving no surface uncovered. not allowed
to paint the walls, she covered sections with colored paper and
put hundreds of glow in the dark stars on every wall and the ceiling.
Under the tutilage
of her master graphic design teacher Margie Scott, as well as
Mrs. Timmons and Mr. Bartman, the fine arts teachers, she explored
various mediums and techniques. Since the use of computers in
graphic design was still in its early stages and everything was
done by hand, this gave Jessica a lot of experience working with
various materials to create her work. Also, working at Bruce's
Variety Store for five years or so gave her constant access to
bizarre inspiration.
While obtaining
a degree in communication design from Pratt in Brooklyn, NY, Jessica
learned that collage is an accepted form of art and could be used
for illustration and for help with "thinking out of the box."A
collector by nature, she has amassed materials ranging from antique
poison labels to Buffy trading cards.
Messy to the core,
she never throws anything out...eventually it will show up in
a piece of her art.
